Hollywood Box Office Update: Monsters University Tops Again, The Heat is a Solid Success but White House Down Falters

This week's two new releases couldn't go past Monsters University as the Disney Pixar movie earned $45 million to retain its position. The animation hit has so far earned in excess of $170 million. Amongst the new releases, comedy The Heat had a super opening of around $39 million. This was easily the best opening ever for its stars Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy  The same can't be said for Channing Tatum as his movie White House Down had a disappointing opening of  just under $25 million. It was also one of the lowest debuts for  its director Roland Emmerich who has given huge hits in past like Independence Day and 2012.

World War Z continued to rake moolah as the movie earned $29 million to push its total past 120 million. The film is on track to become highest grossing film ever for Brad Pitt. Man of Steel had a good weekend as well as the film earned to $20 million to take its total past 240 million. Finally, this year's surprise hit Now You See Me went past $100 million mark. The magician thriller was not expected to earn even anywhere close to this and now the film in on pace to earn at least $120 million in its entire run.

Next week sees the release of Despicable Me 2, one of the most anticipated films of the year.
