Bollywood Box Office Update: Raanjhanaa Fair Opening, Fukrey Emerges Surprise Success

This week saw release of three Bollywood films and one Hollywood flick. None of them, though, could set the box office on fire. South Star Dhanush's debut film Raanjhanaa had an average opening but the movie picked up in the evening. Though the reports are fair, the film needs to do well on the weekend considering its budget and marketing costs. Neil Nitin Mukesh registered another failure as his new film Shortcut Romeo had disastrous beginning at the box office. It will be a huge flop. Enemmy had neither buzz, nor star power and so the film was a non-starter from the beginning. Lastly, Brad Pitt starrer World War Z had an average beginning at the box office. The genre of the film is niche (zombies) and so the film hasn't been given wide release like Iron man 3, Fast and Furious 6 and Man of Steel.

Fukrey emerges hit

Fukrey was the big surprise of the week. The film had a fairly low weekend and the weekdays were the key. It turns out that the film managed to hold on pretty well and grossed around 18 crore at the end of week one,  3-4 crore more than what was expected looking at the weekend trend. A strong second Friday has ensured that the movie will be another surprise medium budget success this year.

Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani finally begun to lose steam as it faced competition from holdover like Fukrey and new release Raanjhanaa. In spite of that, the film looks set to cross the business of EK Tha Tiger. It has earned close to 172 crore till now.
