Man of Steel : Superman Returns with the promise to deliver big this time

One of the most awaited summer releases this year is only a few days away and the enthusiasm is palpable. The last trailer of the latest Superman reboot was met with a huge positive response and it has set the stage for the movie to have a great run at the box office. The early reviews are favorable, but the acid test will be the audience reaction as that is where the last attempt at rebooting Superman franchise had failed miserably.

Superman, in fact, had debuted on the silver screen long before other much more popular comic heroes today like Spiderman and Batman. Christopher Reeve had donned the Superman's cape in 1978 movie which was a huge commercial success. The movie earned $134 million and spawned three sequels - Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983) and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987). However the critical as well as commercial success dwindled with each subsequent film. It will be almost two decades before the fans get to see a new Superman film.

Superman Returns (2006) was released at a time when the Spiderman series had again established the comic book heroes on box office pedestal and the Batman had also seen a successful reboot. However, the movie was a huge disappointment and could manage only around $200 million at US box office, when the expectations were clearly very high. Luckily, the Man of Steel didn't end up in the development hell once again and we will be getting the opportunity to watch the new Superman adventure very next week.

Man of Steel has a lot going for it. The director of the film, Zack Snyder, has two very much acclaimed films to his credit - 300 and The Watchmen. The movie has been produced by none other than Christopher Nolan who not only successfully rebooted Batman series, but also gave the superhero genre more depth and a distinctive identity. The star cast of the film is also pretty solid with Oscar winners & nominees like Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Russel Crowe, along with Diane Lane and Lawrence Fishburne. Henry Cavill, who plays the title role in the film, is comparatively little known. However he looks very much promising and assured in the promos. Micheal Shannon, another Oscar nominated actors plays the role of General Zod, the chief antagonist of the film.

The marketing team of Warner Bros. has done a marvelous job and each subsequent promo raised the enthusiasm level further. Now it remains to be seen how much does the film deliver at the box office. Man of Steel will be released in USA as well as many other countries across the globe, including India, on June 14th.
