World War Z Preview

This week sees the release of Brad Pit starrer World War Z, a post apocalyptic thriller. The film is one of the most anticipated summer movies. It has been directed by Marc Forster of Quantum of Solace fame. The plot of the film follows the typical zombie genre style. The world has fallen victim to zombie pandemic and UN employee Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) has to find a way to stop it before the clock runs out of time and the humanity perishes.

Zombie genre saw a resurgence in the new millennium with the release of Danny Boyle directed 28 Days Later, a critical and commercial hit. Post that many films based on living dead like Dawn of the Dead, 28 Weeks Later and I Am Legend tasted success. However, what differentiates World War Z from these films is the sheer scale. The film deals with the apocalypse at the global level; unlike other films where the film was set in a limited area. Consequently the film has been produced on a massive budget and marketed as that big summer movie.

It's not like the movie had a smooth sailing in the production stage. It went overboard in terms of budget. There was delay in the production and numerous reshoots as well. At one point it looked like that World War Z was a disaster in making. However the things began to change once the first promo of the film was released. The movie was marketed well and b the time second trailer was released, the film had generated enough curiosity. It is not going to be an easy ride for the film though as it will be getting huge competition from the holdovers like Man of Steel and Fast and Furious 6.

World War Z will hit the theaters in US as well as India on June 21st, 2013
