Hollywood Box Office Update: Monsters University and World War Z Open Very Well

Hollywood had a sunny day at the box office as both the new releases exceeded expectations and opened very well. Monsters University kept the Disney Pixar record intact at the box office as it opened at no.1 position with the weekend estimate of $82 million. This was the second best debut for a Pixar film after Toy Story 3's $110 million haul in 2010. The sequel to the Monsters Inc. (2001) carries good reports and will very easily crack $200 million.

The surprise story of the week, though, was the opening of World War Z, a zombie thriller starring Brad Pitt. The film grossed around $66 million in its opening weekend while the most optimistic expectations were not more than $50 million. The film has mixed reports so it is tough to say how much the film will score in the coming days, though it will comfortably cross $100 million.

Man of Steel had a steep fall due to the huge competition from the new releases. The movie earned around $41 million this weekend to take its gross to $210 million. The film has already outgrossed previous Superman flick Superman Returns and will now try to go past The Amazing Spiderman ($262 million).

Fast and Furious 6 continued to rake money in its fifth week and its total now stands at $228 million. On the other hand, Iron Man 3 became the latest film to earn more than $400 million at the US box office.
